Former first lady Jill Biden recently expressed doubt about seeing a female president in her lifetime. During an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, Biden, who is 75 years old, shared her thoughts with Ripa. When asked if they would witness a female U.S. president during their lifetimes, she replied, “Probably not in my lifetime, Kelly, but maybe in yours.”
Biden had believed that Kamala Harris would be the first female president. She noted the strong support and enthusiasm Harris garnered during her campaign, stating, “I saw the excitement. I saw the crowds.” Despite her confidence in Harris, the former vice president faced a significant loss.
Patrice Onwuka, vice president of economic policy at Independent Women, described Biden’s comments as dismissive of female Democratic prospects such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gretchen Whitmer, who have aspirations for 2028. Onwuka criticized Harris as a “status quo candidate” and suggested that policy should take precedence over gender.
Kelly Ripa admitted to being “less hopeful” about a female president than Biden. She emphasized the need for a messenger that resonates with the public. Michelle Obama has also commented on the subject, stating that America might not be ready for a female president. She highlighted Harris’ loss to Donald Trump as an example.
Despite this, Kamala Harris expressed belief in the country’s readiness for a female leader. During an interview with The New York Times, she pointed to the large crowds attending her book tour as evidence of significant support.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a different perspective. During an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Pelosi questioned why a woman commander-in-chief would be deemed impossible. She argued against common objections, highlighting that women serve in the military alongside men.
The discussion around a female president continues to be a topic of debate. Various influential figures have shared differing viewpoints, emphasizing the need for change and a shift in societal attitudes.
