Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur Expresses Gratitude Following Car Accident

Rep. Marcy Kaptur, a Democrat from Ohio, recently shared a video on social media platform X, detailing her recovery after a car accident in Toledo, Ohio. She thanked well-wishers for supporting her during this tough time.

Kaptur, 80, the longest-serving woman in the U.S. House, expressed her gratitude as she moves towards physical rehabilitation. Her message extended to those in her community and beyond who sent good wishes.

She and her staffer, Keegan Zimmerman, were involved in a vehicle accident while en route to a church service. The crash was described by police as a “hit-skip” near Detroit and Central avenues in Toledo. This term is used in Ohio to refer to a driver’s failure to stop after a crash.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur is campaigning for her 23rd term this November in a closely contested race. She shared a heartfelt video where she was seated in a wheelchair, expressing thanks for the support she received.

She acknowledged the assistance of first responders, including fire and rescue squads, police, and medical staff who helped her at the accident scene. As the House is in August recess, she has additional time to focus on her recovery before returning to Washington, D.C.

Following the accident, her office reported that Kaptur suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was alert and active post-collision. She highlighted the dedication of the medical staff at Mercy St. Vincent’s, praising their commitment to saving lives and treating underserved patients.

Kaptur is facing a rematch against former Ohio State Rep. Derek Merrin in November. Her previous win was by a narrow margin, just over the threshold needed to avoid an automatic recount.

In her video, Kaptur also showcased a handmade get-well card from a young boy named Avery. The card featured a drawing of a brown dog named Charlie, whom Kaptur described as “half-human,” adding a light moment to her message.

She said, “These are wonderful people, and they uplift your spirits, and each of you uplift my spirit as we move forward.”
