Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, at 36, announced she is freezing her eggs as she considers her next political steps before the 2028 presidential election. On Instagram, she shared that this decision is about gaining control over her life. Although she did not confirm plans to have children, she expressed the significance of discussing reproductive choices openly.
As a prominent figure in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged the potential political risk of sharing such personal details. In an interview on ABC’s ‘This Week,’ she mentioned she has not ruled out running for president or for the U.S. Senate seat held by Chuck Schumer in 2028.
Ocasio-Cortez aims to normalize discussions about the challenges women face both professionally and personally. She highlighted the impact of policies by President Donald Trump’s administration. Ocasio-Cortez criticized the administration’s stance on reproductive care, which includes opposing abortion rights. The Republican president’s appointees to the Supreme Court facilitated the 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, removing the constitutional right to abortion.
Trump did sign an order in 2025 to lower in vitro fertilization costs. In response to the Supreme Court’s abortion ruling, Ocasio-Cortez sponsored a bill in 2022, aiming to enshrine abortion rights into federal law.
Ocasio-Cortez noted the different standards faced by women in politics and other areas. She pointed out that men don’t face the same scrutiny about family plans when running for office or applying for jobs. This disparity emphasizes the need for these conversations in society.
