President Donald Trump reportedly took a secretive approach to travel after the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. Instead of flying on Air Force One, he used a smaller military plane due to an alleged Iranian assassination threat. This has drawn attention to the safety and security of presidential transport.

Witnesses reported seeing Trump board Air Force One in Turkey. However, The Washington Post disclosed that he was discreetly moved to an Air Force C-32A, a smaller aircraft. He accessed the alternative plane via a catering truck usually used for meal deliveries. This maneuver made Air Force One a decoy, with journalists and White House staff on board. Newsweek has contacted the White House and Secret Service for comments regarding these arrangements.

Trump had previously announced his intention to travel from the NATO summit to a U.K. airbase using the “former Air Force One” for nostalgic reasons. This decision avoided the controversial Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8 jet, whose security features had been questioned despite military modifications. Trump introduced this aircraft at Joint Base Andrews in June, describing it as having unparalleled luxury.

Understanding the Air Force’s C-32A

The C-32A is frequently used by prominent figures like the vice-president and the first lady. When carrying such passengers, the plane is known as Air Force Two. Its cabin features four sections, including a communications center, a stateroom with entertainment amenities and a fold-out bed, and seating for many passengers.

This aircraft is more compact than the more famous Air Force One, yet it prioritizes security. The plane, an upgraded Boeing 757-200, facilitates enhanced visual surveillance for crew members. Advanced avionics and threat detection systems are integral to its design.

Contrasting Air Force One

Air Force One consists of two Boeing 747-200B aircraft, modified extensively for presidential use. These planes serve as mobile command centers with comprehensive security features.

While the C-32 is smaller, security remains paramount. It is equipped with systems that detect potential air and ground threats, as well as advanced navigation systems. These features ensure the aircraft avoids mid-air collisions.

Critics have pointed out that the Qatari Boeing 747-8 lacks usual presidential transport defenses, like heat-seeking missile countermeasures. Both the C-32s and VC-25s have served for years, with newer Boeing replacements anticipated around 2028.
