Chrissy Metz recently shared her decision to use a GLP-1 medication, a popular weight-loss drug, after years of doubt. During an interview on the ‘Today’ show, the This Is Us actress, aged 45, explained that entering perimenopause prompted her to reconsider her health and her family’s history with obesity.
‘I was very skeptical about GLP-1s for years,’ Metz stated. ‘A friend presented a detailed argument, which made me think it might be beneficial.’

Metz spoke about her father’s health issues, which motivated her to take preventive steps. ‘I thought trying the drug could be good for me,’ she noted. Since starting the medication, she has observed improvements in her energy levels and overall health.
Initially hesitant, Metz revealed that learning about the drug’s effects and a positive recommendation from her doctor and team encouraged her to proceed. ‘I was nervous and scared to try it,’ she admitted.
Metz emphasized the importance of a comprehensive lifestyle change, which includes strength training and exercise, alongside the medication. ‘It’s not about taking an easy route,’ she explained. ‘You have to be diligent and prioritize your well-being.’
This decision comes after years of public discussions about Metz’s weight and health, largely due to her character, Kate Pearson, on NBC’s This Is Us. Kate’s story on the show included struggles with weight and body image.
Metz has addressed the societal views on weight, stating in a 2017 interview that educating others and having open discussions could alter stereotypes about obesity. She has also opened up about challenges with food and weight that started before her Hollywood career.
In 2024, Metz recounted on ‘The Jamie Kern Lima Show’ the mental, physical, and emotional abuse she experienced from her stepfather during her youth. ‘He would weigh me in the kitchen or threaten to lock the cupboards,’ she recalled. Metz believes there is now increased awareness of food behaviors and issues compared to the past.
‘I think I’m trying to heal those wounds slowly,’ she mentioned, acknowledging the difficulty of the process.
