Trump’s Economic Strategy Against Iran Faces Scrutiny

4 days ago 0

President Donald Trump claims he initiated conflict with Iran following five decades of ineffective economic pressure. Now, he relies on intensified financial measures to compel Iran to end its nuclear program and reopen shipping routes. Trump’s administration believes that recent bombing campaigns have crippled Iran’s economy, demanding that peace talks include compensation for the U.S.

Trump indicated on Monday that Iran, despite long-standing sanctions, is on the verge of collapse. He emphasized that the pressure could lead to negotiations, though stockpiles of U.S. weapons have decreased. Inflation in Iran is a concern, and U.S. gasoline prices remain high, making the continued war unpopular. Iran uses the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route, as leverage in talks.

Whenever Washington proves itself incapable of pursuing diplomacy, it retreats into sanctions; and whenever those sanctions fail to produce results, it simply increases the dose, said Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Trump introduced ‘Operation Economic Fury’ to impose further financial constraints. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described it as economically equivalent to a bombing campaign. However, Richard Nephew, a research scholar, noted that sanctions alone might not suffice without clear strategic goals.

Juan Zarate, a former deputy national security adviser, mentioned that the U.S.’s financial measures create leverage but require time to yield results. He questioned the U.S.’s willingness to enforce severe sanctions on countries dealing with Iran.

While Trump previously criticized his predecessors for using sanctions, he defends current military and economic actions. The Iranian economy struggles with a shrinking GDP and high inflation. Oil exports have plummeted. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy grows, albeit with rising inflation and borrowing costs affecting Trump’s popularity.

The U.S. military’s efforts have hindered Iran’s oil production capabilities. Trump’s administration views the economic strategies as crucial and suggests that the American economy can withstand the strain better than Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the importance of leveraging the U.S.’s economic strength, alongside military capabilities.
