Northwest Indiana faced violent storms on Tuesday, leaving one person dead in Portage and hundreds of thousands without power. The storms disrupted traffic, downed trees, and delayed school openings on Wednesday for many districts.

Fatal Incident and Power Outages

The Portage Fire Department reported a fatality in a house fire. While an explosion was rumored, it remains unconfirmed. Jeff Chin and Tiffany Gonzales worked to clear downed trees in Valparaiso following Monday’s storm. NIPSCO reported around 288,000 customers without power due to the storm. A news conference by Portage Police was scheduled to discuss the damage.

Northern Indiana Public Service Company’s website noted more than 290,000 customers were affected. The utility emphasized their commitment to assess damage and restore power swiftly. At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Porter County had significant outages, with multiple cities reporting thousands without power.

Widespread Impact Across the Region

In Gary, over 34,000 customers lost power, along with significant numbers in Hammond, Crown Point, Hobart, Merrillville, and Munster. Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties faced similar disruptions, with significant outages reported by Kankakee Valley REMC.

Merrillville authorities mentioned traffic signals were out and trees blocked roads as they worked to clear pathways. Residents were urged to call 911 for emergencies and avoid downed power lines. Town Council President Rick Bella described damaging winds that led to the closure of Town Hall due to safety concerns.

Emergency Measures and Community Response

Munster canceled meetings due to the storms and advised residents to stay indoors. Gary officials advised reporting storm damage and staying off roads to allow emergency personnel access. Hobart similarly urged people to report immediate hazards.

In Hammond, residents were directed to use Hammond 311 to report non-emergency storm issues. The Indiana Department of Transportation worked on clearing state roads.

Portage’s Response to Severe Weather

The Portage Fire Department confirmed a house fire fatality amidst catastrophic storm damage. Emergency responders faced long response times due to debris and hazardous conditions. An explosion in connection with the incident is under investigation.

Portage Mayor Austin Bonta declared a state of emergency, converting City Hall’s council chambers into a command center. They mapped all downed trees and lines to prioritize road clearance. Woodland Park served as an emergency shelter for residents needing safety due to gas leaks or damage.

Portage Township Schools delayed their first day due to the storm. They continue to assess campus safety and update parents on recovery progress.

Public Transportation Disruptions

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District noted extensive damage, suspending South Shore Line service on the Monon Corridor. Fallen trees and damaged overhead wires necessitated bus services between Dune Park and South Bend.
