Minnesota state House Speaker Lisa Demuth has won the Republican primary for governor, according to NBC News projections. Her victory came against Mike Lindell, a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, who had previously been leading in limited public polling.
Lindell, known for his role as the MyPillow founder and his alignment with Trump’s election conspiracy theories, faced significant challenges in the final phase of his campaign. Disputes within the Republican Party, particularly concerning Lindell’s residency raised by the Minnesota GOP chairman, weakened his position.
Despite Trump’s endorsement, Lindell’s campaign struggled as party members sought a candidate capable of defeating Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar in the general election. Klobuchar had appeared at a Minnesota Farmfest forum, criticizing Republican candidates as overly aligned with Trump’s agenda.
During her campaign, Demuth targeted Democrats in Minnesota for their handling of significant fraud scandals related to Medicaid and pandemic aid. These incidents involved allegations of misappropriated funds from welfare programs. Demuth, who played a key role in establishing the Fraud Prevention Agency Oversight Committee, used these cases to criticize the perceived failure of “incompetent Democrat control.”
Earlier this year, current Democratic Governor Tim Walz withdrew from the race for a third term, influenced by these fraud-related criticisms. Subsequently, Klobuchar launched her gubernatorial campaign, joining a small group of senators seeking governorship this year.
As the election approaches, Republicans will face challenges in overcoming the state’s political landscape. Kamala Harris, as Vice President, won Minnesota by approximately four percentage points in the latest presidential election, alongside her running mate, Gov. Walz.
