The New York Police Department (NYPD) will not provide a security detail for Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife during her upcoming vacation to two Middle Eastern countries marked as terror hotspots. This decision contradicts earlier statements from the mayor’s office.
A spokesperson for the NYPD indicated that officers do not accompany individuals traveling for personal reasons to countries with level 4 travel advisories. These advisories, issued by the State Department, strongly discourage travel due to terrorism threats.
Rama Duwaji, the mayor’s wife, plans to visit family in Syria and Lebanon in September. Both countries fall under the ‘Do Not Travel’ category, highlighting significant security concerns.
“The NYPD does not send officers to countries with level 4 travel advisories for discretionary reasons such as personal travel,” an NYPD spokesperson noted.
Initial reports from the mayor’s office suggested that Duwaji would receive an NYPD security detail. Dora Pekec, a spokeswoman for Mamdani, mentioned that this arrangement followed a strong recommendation from the NYPD. However, this information proved inaccurate.
The misunderstanding came to light when Mayor Mamdani addressed the issue, labeling it as a ‘miscommunication’ by his staff when questioned by PIX11.
The President of the NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association, Scott Munro, vehemently opposed the notion of officers accompanying the First Lady to the Middle East. Munro emphasized that NYPD detectives are essential in New York City, tasked with resident protection and crime fighting.
“Our detectives are needed here in New York City protecting residents and fighting crime,” Munro stressed.
Mamdani’s previous criticisms of the NYPD further complicate the situation. He has been vocal in his condemnation of the police department, describing it as corrupt and advocating for its defunding. These statements have sparked tension between him and law enforcement.
During his campaign, Mamdani made conflicting statements about his stance on defunding the police, which has stirred controversy.
Recently, he faced backlash and was booed off the stage at a pro-police event in Staten Island, highlighting ongoing discord.
