In July, the New York Islanders launched an initiative allowing fans to design the team’s next third jersey. This move aimed to involve fans who had previously criticized the team’s jersey choices. However, the plan didn’t go as expected.
The organization unveiled the eight finalists, but social media feedback has been largely negative. Despite the options not being seen as terrible, none are considered exciting either. One design arguably stands out, featuring a navy color with the word “ISLANDERS” and a chest stripe. Fans of classic designs may appreciate this choice.
Historically, the Islanders’ third jerseys have not been popular. The jerseys used between 2011 and 2014 were not fondly remembered, though they at least represented a break from tradition. The current design process offered fans innovative tools, yet the results are underwhelming.
Many NHL enthusiasts, including those who submitted plans that were rejected, have expressed their disappointment online. One design notably resembles the Edmonton Oilers’ previous orange jerseys. Despite the tepid response, one of these eight designs will be chosen.
The contest winner’s jersey will be introduced next season. The designer will also receive a “VIP gameday experience” as a prize. With strong current home and away jerseys, some fans question the need for an additional jersey.
