A former Los Angeles vice detective, Michael Douglas Brambles, was arrested again after being paroled in 2020. He was previously sentenced to 102 years for multiple rapes three decades ago. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office revealed that Brambles, now 77, faces charges of kidnapping to commit robbery and using a firearm in the alleged crime.
Brambles allegedly entered Arabella’s Boutique in Thousand Oaks, California, during the store’s closing. He reportedly pointed a handgun at a woman identified as SW, forced her into the backroom, tied her hands, and sexually assaulted her. Authorities accuse him of stealing from the business as well.
Because of the statute of limitations, the sexual assault charges cannot be filed. However, Brambles was previously identified as a suspect shortly after the crime occurred. He was amid prosecution for numerous robberies and sexual assaults, ultimately being convicted on 26 counts, including 18 armed robberies.
Originally meant to serve a life sentence, SW’s case was dismissed with her agreement, assuming he would remain imprisoned indefinitely. However, a California law allowed Brambles to apply for parole in 2020 due to his age.
At his parole hearing, Brambles denied additional sexual assault allegations beyond those in Los Angeles County. As investigators with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office examined SW’s cold case, they discovered his parole status.
Brambles is now held in Ventura County on $2 million bail. SW expressed shock upon learning of his release after six years. She emphasized the denial of justice for her and other victims, expressing hope for a new pursuit of justice.
Brambles may face 12 years to life if convicted of the new charges. District Attorney Erik Nasarenko highlighted SW’s bravery and determination in pursuing justice once more.
