On that Saturday, Yan made his much-anticipated Citi Field debut. With two outs in the top of the ninth and an 0-2 count, he believed his fastball on the outside corner was a game-ending strike against Nasim Nuñez. Yet, the home plate umpire did not agree, catching Yan mid-air in celebration.

Realizing the error, Yan tapped his hat, prompting an ABS system review. Despite his efforts, the call stood as a ball. “Now, that was funny,” Gary Cohen, the Mets play-by-play announcer, remarked on the SNY broadcast. Yan, determined not to let the mishap affect him, struck out Nuñez two pitches later with a slider, making his celebration worthwhile.

At that moment, the Mets were trailing by a run, needing at least one score to extend the game. The offense, however, took charge. Brett Baty’s walk ignited the inning, followed by Jorge Polanco’s single, putting the winning run on base. Francisco Alvarez then hit a double, tying the game and advancing the winning run to third.

Francisco Lindor clinched the victory, securing a single that brought home the winning run, triggering a joyous celebration in the stadium. Yan celebrated with his teammates, marking his first MLB win after keeping the Nationals scoreless across 1.2 innings.

Yan’s journey as a 29-year-old rookie began in the minors, where his unique strikeout celebrations first gained attention. In his initial five appearances with New York, fans have witnessed his lively spirit. Although he celebrated early on this occasion, the enthusiasm to impress the home crowd was evident.

Yan expressed feeling welcomed by the fans, speaking through a translator after his Citi Field premiere. In his outing, he successfully struck out three batters, maintaining an impressive 1.80 ERA to date.
