Tommy John, MLB All-Star and Surgery Pioneer, Dies at 83

Thomas “Tommy” John, a four-time Major League Baseball All-Star who achieved over 288 career victories during his 26-year professional baseball career, has passed away at the age of 83. His passing was confirmed by his agent to CBS News, stating that John died peacefully at his Florida home on Saturday, surrounded by his wife, Cherly, and family.

John’s most significant contribution to baseball was the introduction of an advanced elbow surgery in 1974, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. The procedure, intended to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament, is now famously known as “Tommy John surgery.” This innovative surgery allowed him to continue playing, amassing an additional 164 wins, ending his career with an impressive total of 288 victories, over 2,200 strikeouts, and a 3.34 ERA by the time he retired in 1989.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, John joined the Cleveland Indians, now the Cleveland Guardians, at 18 years old, showcasing his exceptional curveball skills. After three seasons in the minors, he made his major league debut in 1963. Throughout his career, he played for several teams including the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels (currently the Los Angeles Angels), Oakland Athletics, and the New York Yankees.

Tommy John was a four-time All-Star, earning these honors in 1968, 1978, 1979, and 1989. His dedication and skill earned him a beloved place in baseball history. Days before his passing, John wrote a touching farewell letter to fans, which the Yankees shared during the 78th Old-Timers’ Day. The letter, written amid undisclosed health issues, expressed his gratitude to former teammates and fans for their support throughout his career.

In his letter, he thanked Dr. Jobe for the surgery that not only saved his career but also aided numerous other pitchers in continuing theirs. He conveyed his appreciation to fans, stating, “Thank you to all the fans who supported me and my teammates for 26 years. I will never forget you.”
