Gillian Anderson’s Reflections on Career and Family

Gillian Anderson has recently opened up about her Hollywood journey and the impact it had on her family life. In an interview with The Sunday Times, the actress, best known for her role as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on “The X-Files,” shared insights into her choices and their consequences.

Anderson, now 58, talked about the sacrifices she made as her career progressed and how these decisions affected her family. She admitted to some regrets regarding her early years as a mother.

“I have absolutely no regrets in my life,” Anderson said, before acknowledging that her early parenting could have been more thoughtful. “There are a couple of things, in terms of early parenting, that I now would say, I wish I’d thought this through or I wish I’d been less selfish,” she added.

Early Career and Motherhood

Anderson became a mother at 26, shortly after beginning to film “The X-Files.” Her daughter, Piper, was born to her and her first husband, Clyde Klotz. At the time, Anderson’s career was taking off, and the show required long working hours, leaving little time for her family.

After divorcing Klotz in 1997, Piper divided her time between Los Angeles, where “The X-Files” was taped, and Vancouver, where her father resided. Piper’s education included attending a French lycée in both cities, a decision Anderson now sees as a challenge for her daughter.

“It was intense for her, with no French in the household, to suddenly be getting a plane every three weeks,” Anderson reflected.

Reflection on Career Choices

Despite the pressures of stardom, Anderson expressed that she might have been able to leverage her status for a more balanced work schedule. She also contemplated the possibility of living differently, potentially working less and being more present as a parent.

“There’s another version of my life where I could have worked less, had a smaller life and been more present as a parent,” Anderson said.

Her perspective on parenting shifted after having two more children, sons Oscar and Felix, with businessman Mark Griffiths.

Current Career and Outlook

Anderson has maintained a successful acting career, with roles in “The Crown” and “Sex Education,” among others. Despite the ongoing challenges, she continues to work actively in the industry.

As she approaches 60, Anderson is rethinking her future plans. Despite considering a slowdown to focus on directing and art, she finds herself enjoying her current work.

“I feel very lucky to still be working,” she said, contemplating her active career.

The actress remains grateful for the opportunities she’s had and is enthusiastic about her continued involvement in the entertainment industry.
