Caitlyn Jenner, a Fox News contributor, commented on the WNBA’s current debate regarding transgender athletes. Speaking on ‘Fox News @ Night’, Jenner criticized the league for its inconsistent approach and called for the protection of Title IX.
The WNBA has faced scrutiny over its lack of clear guidelines on whether transgender athletes can participate in the league. Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White have highlighted this issue by attempting to join the WNBA, pointing out the perceived inconsistencies.
Jenner, discussing with Trace Gallagher, highlighted the hypocrisy she sees in the league’s handling of the situation. She noted that despite meetings on the matter, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has not provided a definitive solution. Jenner stated, “Cathy, XX, you’re in. XY you’re out. It’s that simple.”
Jenner supports the International Olympic Committee’s ban on transgender women in female sports, citing the biological advantages that hormone therapy does not fully eliminate. She emphasized the importance of protecting women’s sports, referencing Title IX as a pivotal piece of legislation for women’s equality in athletics.
The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement contains Article XIII, Section 1(a), which specifies that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” However, as reported by OutKick/Fox News Digital, the document fails to define “woman” or “women.” The terms related to gender identity are absent from the 409-page agreement.
A WNBA spokesperson mentioned that the league has held meetings on various topics, including the conversation about transgender athletes and addressing hate targeted at players online. The league expressed strong opposition to using these discussions to demean or marginalize individuals.
