Navigating Family Finances Post-Divorce

41 minutes ago 0

Dear Carolyn,

My mother and stepfather, both in their mid-60s, are divorcing over financial disagreements related to retirement. This split has been challenging for everyone involved. My stepdad plans a peaceful retirement by a river close to his family. Meanwhile, my mom aims to relocate to a larger city to maintain her social life and continue working. I live far from both, but I think it’s important for my son to connect with each of them.

After the separation, my mom feels more desperate for financial help, especially regarding travel expenses. She believes that covering her travel would facilitate her visits to us and allow her to maintain contact with my son. This situation is putting a significant burden on our family finances, creating stress and tension.

It’s crucial for us to find a balance between supporting her emotionally and financially while also considering our own financial health. Moving forward, it might be necessary to have frank discussions about realistic expectations and explore other ways she can visit that are more financially sustainable for us.
