A coalition of soccer fan organizations worldwide initiated a petition on Thursday. They are calling for Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president after his attempt to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. The petition, using the tagline InfantinOut, also advocates for a complete overhaul of FIFA to prevent future issues.
The petition criticizes Infantino’s proposal to create a commercial spinoff. The backlash led him to abandon the plan, which fan groups described as a significant betrayal of soccer values. The organizations involved in this petition include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and the North American Independent Supporters Council, alongside about 40 national fan groups globally.
Despite these calls, Infantino has not stepped down. UEFA, the European soccer body, and leaders of North America’s CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation have shown no confidence in him. The fan petition claims Infantino has failed in leadership and governance, criticizing his concentration of power and lack of accountability.
They argue that for the sake of FIFA’s credibility and the sport’s future, Infantino needs to resign. The petition also mentions his previous endorsements of controversial initiatives, such as the failed European Super League and the proposal for biennial World Cups.
