Taylor Sheridan’s Unexpected Career Shift and Ranch Purchase

2 hours ago 0

Taylor Sheridan, acclaimed writer and director, nearly retired before making a significant investment that altered his plans. During a conversation on the “Rodeo Time” podcast, Sheridan shared how his acquisition of the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, valued at $330 million, delayed his retirement and led to an exclusive deal with Paramount.

Sheridan, 56, had initially planned to retire after completing “Yellowstone.” With his purchase of a ranch in Weatherford, which he paid for outright, he felt financially secure. “I was going to put my feet up and show horses and have my little hobby herd,” he explained. However, he recognized that buying the Four Sixes Ranch would extend his working days.

Before purchasing the ranch, Sheridan ensured the general manager would continue overseeing daily operations. He also confirmed his son’s willingness to manage the ranch in the future. The plan to retire post-“Yellowstone” evolved after this acquisition.

The Four Sixes Ranch, an iconic setting for season 4 of “Yellowstone,” became available after its previous owner, Anne Marion, passed away. Sheridan learned that she hadn’t bequeathed the ranch to her daughter. “It was going to be broken up and sold off,” Sheridan noted, but Marion had requested the ranch maintain her vision. Sheridan was chosen as the ideal candidate.

Faced with the $330 million price, Sheridan humorously recounted, “I’m about 300 million short.” This financial challenge led him to sign an exclusive deal with Paramount, an offer he had previously declined. “Paramount had been after me to make an overall deal,” he said. This agreement facilitated the ranch purchase.

After securing the ranch on January 21, 2022, Sheridan developed several series for Paramount, including “Mayor of Kingstown,” “1883,” “1923,” “Lioness,” “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” and “The Madison.”

“Lioness” is airing its third season. Actor Michael Kelly praised Sheridan, calling him “one of the greatest storytellers.” Kelly expressed his admiration, stating he’d happily participate in any future projects with Sheridan. “He’s just one of the smartest dudes you’ll ever meet,” Kelly remarked.
