Challenges Await Raiders’ Rookie Quarterback Fernando Mendoza

Fernando Mendoza, the NFL’s first overall draft pick, is learning the challenges of being a rookie quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders. During his second preseason game against the Houston Texans, Mendoza threw an interception. This wasn’t just any interception; Texans linebacker Wade Woodaz intercepted the pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.

Mendoza, visibly upset, was seen on the sideline as teammates tried to comfort him. Veteran player Maxx Crosby, known for his accomplishments with the Raiders, offered words of encouragement. Crosby told ESPN’s Laura Rutledge, “That’s football. It’s not going to be perfect. He’s a rookie. You have to go through ups and downs as part of the game, and it’s how you respond.” Crosby advised Mendoza to keep his focus and continue playing his game.

This game contrasted sharply with Mendoza’s debut against the Arizona Cardinals. In that game, Mendoza completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown without any interceptions. In the game against the Texans, Mendoza’s performance dipped, completing just over 50% of passes (8 for 15) and ending with a passer rating of 42.6.

Mendoza’s evening included one interception, followed by six consecutive completions, then two missed throws, one of which was dropped. Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman weighed in, stating, “As Mendoza progresses, he’ll learn the relationship between defender and receiver is a lot tighter in the NFL than in college.” Aikman emphasized that the NFL’s pace is faster and requires adjustments.

Mendoza’s second NFL game and first start may serve as a crucial learning experience for him as he adjusts to the league’s demands.
