Though Ian Machado Garry was not featured at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night, his name surfaced during discussions involving UFC CEO Dana White. The topic centered around White’s recent criticism following Machado Garry’s bout with Islam Makhachev at UFC 330. In this encounter, Makhachev’s UFC Welterweight Championship was at stake.
The core criticism from White, along with Makhachev and others, suggested Machado Garry was overly cordial to opponents instead of displaying the aggression needed for victory. White affirmed his stance on this matter but clarified a reporter’s interpretation of his prior comments after the Fight Night event. The reporter asserted White expressed a desire for Machado Garry to “annihilate [Makhachev] in the fifth round.” White responded, “I didn’t say I’d like for him to do that. What I said was, you get this opportunity; you’ve worked your whole life to get there.”
White elaborated, stating, “I thought Ian Garry performed well up to the fifth round, assuming that was his strategic approach [from previous rounds], and then wanting to start hugging and shaking hands.” White offered these remarks following Saturday’s UFC Fight Night featuring Hernandez vs. Rodrigues.
“Tell him how great he is when they’re putting the [expletive] belt on you. Ian might never have that opportunity again and probably will never get the chance to fight Islam again,” White emphasized.
White clarified his comments, saying, “I’m not [expletive] on Ian. He’s a classy guy, but be a nice guy when those five minutes are up. You have five minutes to finish one of the greatest of all time.”
Makhachev emerged victorious, securing his championship title through a unanimous decision. He concurred with White’s critique of Machado Garry post-UFC 330.
Despite the criticism, Machado Garry receives accolades for his proficiency as an MMA fighter. Among 19 bouts, he boasts 17 victories, countered by two losses, including his recent defeat by Makhachev, who ranks among the elite. UFC’s Meta rankings currently position Machado Garry as No. 2 in the welterweight category, with Carlos Prates ahead.
While White has not ruled out future title shots for Machado Garry, he implied that Garry missed a unique opportunity against Makhachev. Notably, Machado Garry has previously bested Prates via unanimous decision at a UFC on ESPN event in April 2025, hinting at the possibility of another chance at the championship.
