Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels recently sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU over the use of his name, image, and likeness. This action resulted in unexpected backlash from football fans.
The controversy began when Daniels felt disrespected by LSU’s decision to allow current cornerback DJ Pickett to wear No. 5. This was the same number Daniels wore while playing for LSU. His public statement on Instagram explaining the move intensified reactions, leading to widespread mockery on social media.
Public Reaction and Social Media Trolling
The aftermath of Daniels’ actions was characterized by numerous trolling instances across various platforms. The New York Mets humorously linked a victory score to Daniels, quipping, “Stopped at 4 out of respect for Jayden Daniels.” StubHub also joined, jokingly announcing they would no longer sell tickets in groups of five.
Many others followed suit, yet Daniels refrained from further media comments. During a press conference, when questioned about the issue, Daniels simply stated, “I posted the statement on Instagram and said everything I needed to say. So, appreciate y’all.”
Focus on Football Amid Controversy
Despite the distraction, Daniels remains committed to football. He recently emphasized being “locked in on training camp” in his statement regarding the letter to LSU. Though he expressed gratitude for his time at LSU and acknowledged some unresolved issues, his primary focus remains on his current team.
“I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus. I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there,” Daniels shared. “Obviously, there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately.”
Daniels aims to have a complete season in 2026 after injuries in his previous season. Having earned the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year title and leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game, he hopes to regain form and success.
