Controversy Strikes Cubs-Diamondbacks Game
Chicago Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong lost his temper during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the sixth inning, he believed a balk went unnoticed. As Crow-Armstrong took a large lead from third base, Arizona’s pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez delivered a quick pitch. This led Crow-Armstrong to argue that Rodriguez had committed a balk.
Crow-Armstrong’s frustration was evident when the umpires decided no balk occurred. He was restrained by third base coach Quintin Berry while expressing his grievances. Cubs manager Craig Counsell had to intervene as well.
Cub’s Manager and Umpires’ Role
After the Cubs’ 2-0 loss, Crow-Armstrong commented on the umpires’ decision. He stated, “I saw four umpires miss a pretty obvious play. Their job is to get calls right and figure it out if mistaken.” Crew chief Alfonso Márquez later acknowledged the oversight. After reviewing the video, he agreed a balk should have been called.
Game Outcome and Cubs’ Performance
In the game’s sixth inning, the Diamondbacks took the lead. They added another run in the eighth inning. Crow-Armstrong contributed to the Cubs’ offense with one of their two hits during the game. Chicago’s lead in the National League Wild Card standings has reduced to a two-game margin over the Philadelphia Phillies, who have a strong recent performance.
