New York: Thea Frodin, a 17-year-old tennis player, is set to play her first U.S. Open singles match against the world’s No. 2 player in women’s tennis. This is a significant milestone for Frodin, who was previously the body double for actor Demi Singleton in the film King Richard, portraying a young Serena Williams.

Frodin spoke about this opportunity saying, “I’ve worked tirelessly to reach this stage, and to have this chance is truly special for me.” Her journey to the U.S. Open began with her victory at the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships, earning her a wild card entry.

Frodin’s tennis skills also opened doors to the entertainment industry. Her excellence at the 10-and-under level in California brought her to the auditions for the on-screen role as Singleton’s body double. Her experience on set lasted six months and included working alongside prominent actors such as Will Smith, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams.

Reflecting on her time on set, Frodin remarked, “Being part of that environment and playing someone I admire was exceptionally rewarding.” Her ability to mimic Williams’ swings was facilitated by her familiarity with the tennis icon’s techniques from years of observation. However, the imitation later influenced her personal game style. “After the movie, I had inadvertently adopted her strokes, finding it difficult to revert to my own,” Frodin shared. This adjustment led to some familial concerns, although the experience granted her notable skills.

Frodin, who competed in the U.S. Open doubles last year, has yet to meet Serena or Venus Williams. The upcoming match against Elena Rybakina marks her debut at the WTA Tour level, following an unsuccessful attempt during qualifying rounds in Miami.

With a year remaining in high school, Frodin is uncertain about her future plans. She has expressed an interest in balancing her tennis career with potential opportunities in Hollywood. She said, “My primary focus has always been tennis, yet I find the idea of managing both paths appealing.” Her enthusiasm for acting life remains strong, and she is open to pursuing it further if the chance arises.
