The Federalist elections correspondent Brianna Lyman spoke with New Yorkers regarding President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’ Lyman explored the public’s reactions and also commented on the Clinton Foundation’s internship postings demanding ‘high discretion.’ Additionally, an incident at a Wisconsin youth football game where a parent reportedly tripped a player was discussed on ‘Hannity.’
A recent poll revealed that a majority of Americans disagree with Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario and to raise tariffs on Canadian goods. In a three-day Reuters/Ipsos survey concluded on Sunday, 63% opposed the lake’s renaming, with only 14% in favor. The rest were undecided or did not respond.
The poll also showed that 57% opposed the new tariffs on Canadian goods, while 20% supported them. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital, “Canada has been a bad neighbor by ripping off our country for years.” She emphasized Trump’s commitment to protecting American industries and workers, attributing it to the President’s bold leadership.
President Trump signed an executive order last Thursday to rename Lake Ontario, saying it was a decision he had considered for a long time. He compared it to the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum was instructed to update the Geographic Names Information System to reflect this change, with Lake Ontario described as a ‘tremendous asset’ to the U.S.
The executive order mentioned the U.S. as the greatest protector of the Great Lakes, including Lake Ontario. It stated that without U.S. security and investment, the freshwater system could suffer in terms of shipping, recreation, and responsible use. On Truth Social, Trump accused Ontario of exploiting American businesses, claiming Canada wishes to be treated like a state but isn’t one.
The U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods in late July, which took effect earlier this month. In response, Canada implemented its own tariffs up to 50% on American imports. The White House released a map of ‘Lake America’ soon after Trump signed the executive order formally renaming Lake Ontario.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll included 1,023 responses from U.S. adults, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
