Donald Trump has returned to office with a commitment to implement extensive measures against both legal and unauthorized immigration in the United States.
In January 2026, the Trump administration declared a suspension of visa processing for citizens of 75 countries. This decision aligns with other immigration limitations introduced after Trump’s return to power. According to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, this freeze targeted those who could become a “public charge,” meaning individuals dependent on public benefits for essential needs.
In August, a federal court invalidated the visa suspension. Additionally, the administration halted the scheduling of immigrant visa appointments globally to allow for consular officer training. This pause is anticipated to conclude by early to mid-September.
