Todd Monken Stands Firm on Deshaun Watson as Browns QB1 Despite Fan Disapproval

4 weeks ago 0

The Cleveland Browns have selected Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Despite backlash from fans, the decision by head coach Todd Monken remains unchanged.

Watson, who has faced criticism from Cleveland fans following his comments to the press, confronts the challenge of regaining their support. However, Monken appears unperturbed by the public’s reaction.

‘Absolutely not,’ Monken stated when questioned about the fan dissatisfaction. He expressed that while a united front between fans and the team would be ideal, it does not influence his decision-making.

Monken emphasized his focus remains on what benefits the Browns throughout the season. His choice of Watson as QB1 stems from Watson’s capability of generating explosive plays.

Monken asserted, ‘You’re not going to be elite on offense and score points if you can’t create explosives.’ He underscored the difficulty of driving the football downfield without substantial gains.

Studies support the notion that incorporating explosive plays significantly raises the likelihood of scoring. As coordinators chase such plays and minimize turnovers, Monken acknowledged this ongoing battle with defenses that strive to prevent these advantages.

He continued, ‘Having explosive players aids in winning this chess match. It involves scheming against defensive formations and executing with solid protection to capitalize on scoring chances.’

Monken’s endorsement of Watson reflects his confidence in Watson’s ability to extend plays and accumulate points for the team.

Despite the boos, Monken’s decision keeps Watson on the field unless Watson struggles to convert big plays into scores, risking his position as Cleveland’s primary passer.
