Varsity Spotlight: Jaylen Newkirk’s Quarterback Journey

4 weeks ago 0

Transitioning to varsity football typically means players fill supporting roles to ease into the higher level of competition. Grayslake North quarterback Jaylen Newkirk took a different path. He became the lead quarterback after Mitch Hughes graduated, stepping into the role as a sophomore.

Newkirk had been a wide receiver during his freshman year but had to switch gears quickly. The announcement that he would succeed Hughes came just days before the first scrimmage. Reflecting on this, Newkirk shared that while he was excited, he felt the pressure of following a successful quarterback. “I took it all in and tried to show everyone what I’m capable of,” he stated.

The team faced challenges in the previous season, winning only one game. Despite this, Newkirk gained valuable experience. His breakout junior season has seen the Knights winning both nonconference games. Grayslake North amassed 94 points last season and now averages 41 points per game. Newkirk contributed eight touchdowns so far.

The upcoming match against North Chicago marks the start of the Northern Lake County Conference schedule. “Last year was a lot of guessing,” Newkirk remarked about his role. He learned how to leverage his running ability, realizing the impact of his speed and length. “I don’t want to be running all the time, but the coaches saw it, and there are now plays we have to help take advantage.”

His skills shined during the season opener against Vernon Hills, where he threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, totaling 98 rushing yards. The following week, he threw three touchdown passes and ran for another during a victory over Wheeling.

Coach Brian Johnson noted Newkirk’s growth over the past year, highlighting improved maturity and passing ability. With younger teammates surrounding him, the teamwork has been integral. Newkirk highlighted his offensive line’s improvement, particularly praising his uncle, junior center Alex Danzy. Living with Danzy was beneficial for building a strong connection and understanding.

Determined to improve his skills, Newkirk focused on film study and addressed weaknesses identified in his past performance. His involvement in high jumping further developed his competitive spirit, taking him to the Class 2A state meet.

Over the summer, Newkirk demonstrated leadership qualities valuable for a quarterback. His approach to correcting teammates is constructive and accountability-driven, earning him respect. “During practice, if he sees someone doing something wrong, he’ll explain how to do it without yelling at someone,” said slotback Lucas Woyat.

Newkirk knows his performance directly impacts the team’s success. “I knew this year would be different and knew I could be a difference-maker.” His commitment to improvement aims to ensure the team is seen as more than their previous record.
