NBA Punishes Clippers for Salary Cap Violations

4 weeks ago 0

Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer faces a one-year suspension from the NBA. The team also forfeits five first-round draft picks and incurs a $30 million fine due to salary cap violations linked to Kawhi Leonard. Alongside this, Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations, receives a six-month suspension, and Gillian Zucker, team president of business operations, faces a one-year suspension. Leonard is fined $700,000.

The league’s decision follows a lengthy investigation spearheaded by an external law firm. Despite assertions of innocence by the Clippers, the NBA announced severe penalties.

“We vehemently reject the NBA’s findings, which are the result of a heavily biased investigation seeking to justify a predetermined narrative rather than facts and evidence,” the Clippers stated.

The Clippers plan to challenge these penalties through arbitration, asserting their stance against the findings publicly.

A probe in September 2025 investigated whether Leonard’s $28 million endorsement contract with Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC violated league rules. Pablo Torre reported on the issue. Aspiration’s co-founder, Joseph Sanberg, has been jailed for 14 years for defrauding investors of at least $248 million.

Leonard expressed regret over any lapses in judgment within his close circle, acknowledging the distraction caused to fans and family.

“I entered into my contract with the Clippers as well as the agreements in good faith, fully committed to fulfilling my obligations,” Leonard stated, clarifying his unawareness of any salary cap circumvention intentions.

The NBA accused Leonard and his former business manager, Dennis Robertson, of exerting pressure on the Clippers for off-court income opportunities, which led to rules violations.

Ballmer’s suspension attributes to his role in aiding Leonard in obtaining such opportunities. Leonard’s trade to the Toronto Raptors remains pending, but both parties expressed willingness for his return.

“As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control, closing this chapter, and moving forward with a clean slate,” Leonard mentioned.
