This year marks the first 9/11 memorial service for Zohran Mamdani as the mayor of New York City. He approaches this event as an “enormous responsibility,” focusing on honoring those who lost their lives rather than politics.
Mamdani expressed his sentiments, stating, “It’s about those that were killed that day. It’s about their families. It’s about the lives that have been shattered. And when you go through the museum, you see in those portraits an entire city. You see the breadth of what makes this city New York.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing and remembering the victims during these anniversaries.
As the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, approaches, Mayor Mamdani wants the day to be a solemn remembrance. “That we gather together, not as individuals, but as New Yorkers, with love of that same city that they sought to protect,” he stated. He highlighted the importance of never forgetting the attacks and acknowledging the courage displayed on that day.
Thousands continue to suffer from illnesses related to 9/11, which has led to calls for the release of documents concerning the attacks. Mamdani supports transparency, saying, “If there are documents that we are able to release, I think that they should always be released.” The 2027 city budget dedicates $34.2 million to create an online portal for 9/11-related documents. “They can type in their keywords. They can look through these documents,” he explained, addressing the public’s frustrations about access to information.
Reflecting on the communication challenges faced by FDNY and NYPD during the attacks, Mamdani stressed the need for top-quality equipment for emergency personnel. “I think that our emergency services personnel deserve the best equipment,” he said. He advocated for collaboration across federal, state, and local levels to ensure these needs are met.
When questioned about expanding surveillance to prevent future attacks, Mamdani emphasized balancing safety and civil liberties. “I firmly believe that we can keep this city safe while also respecting the rights of the people of this city,” he stated. He praised the current NYPD for respecting rights while delivering public safety.
Given New York City’s status as a prime terror target, Mamdani outlined his approach to handling credible threats. “The first thing I would do is sit down with my police commissioner and all of the top brass and work through exactly what the threat is,” he explained, prioritizing the safety of New Yorkers.
