The Importance of Secretaries of State in Upholding Democratic Elections

4 weeks ago 0

Free and fair elections are crucial components of any representative democracy. For a government to truly reflect the will of the people, citizens must have the opportunity to express that will through voting. Notable figures like John Lewis, a prominent civil rights leader, emphasized that voting is a powerful non-violent tool in a democratic society. Similarly, former President Ronald Reagan referred to the right to vote as the ‘crown jewel of American liberties.’

Recently, the integrity of the U.S. electoral system has faced significant challenges. Former President Donald Trump, dissatisfied with his 2020 election loss, promoted numerous baseless claims regarding electoral misconduct. These included allegations of illegal voting, rigged machinery, and other unfounded threats to election security. Such actions have undermined public confidence in election integrity and eroded trust in the officials managing these processes.

The role of secretaries of state in ensuring secure elections has grown increasingly important. In November, voters in 26 states will elect officials to oversee the 2028 presidential elections. Historically a low-profile position, the office of the secretary of state gained national attention in 2000 during the Florida ballot controversy.

Trump’s fixation on his electoral defeat prompted allies to attempt leverage over the election process. Groups like the America First SOS Coalition emerged, endorsing candidates committed to perpetuating false election fraud claims. In 2022, this coalition influenced races in key battleground states.

A notable example is Tina Peters, the ex-election chief in Mesa County, Colorado, who was convicted for orchestrating a security breach to contest 2020 election results. Despite her conviction and Trump’s substantial victory in Mesa County, Peters contributed to further distrust in the electoral process.

This year, several election-deniers are once again vying for secretary of state positions, including candidates in Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin. These races are crucial, as they involve candidates like Jim Marchant in Nevada, who continues to promote unfounded conspiracy theories. Interestingly, among these theories is a proposal to utilize technology to verify voter identity through measuring heartbeats.

In Arizona, incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes faces Alexander Kolodin, a Republican state representative with a controversial legal history concerning election fraud claims. Kolodin’s previous lawsuits were swiftly dismissed due to a lack of credible evidence.

In Wisconsin, another pivotal state, Republican candidate Jay Schroeder advocates dismantling the bipartisan commission that oversees elections, despite its successful track record. Schroeder has openly questioned the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory.

With Congress and statehouse seats at stake, significant resources are allocated toward these races. However, the importance of the secretary of state races cannot be overstated. These officials hold the key to maintaining election integrity. Ensuring trustworthy individuals secure these positions is paramount for preserving democratic principles.
