Virginia Mother Appeals Child Abuse Registry Placement

4 weeks ago 0

A mother in Virginia, Karyann Parkinson, is contesting a criminal charge after her 5-year-old son, Sam, was found walking alone in their gated community. Security stopped Sam as he collected goose feathers along a neighborhood path.

Both the police and Child Protective Services became involved after the incident. Although Parkinson’s six-month jail sentence was suspended, she still faces the charge and her name remains on the state’s child abuse and neglect registry for seven years. This occurred while she was eight months pregnant.

Parkinson was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a first-degree misdemeanor. She explained her perspective on the situation, acknowledging that many might be shocked to hear of a young child alone near water. However, she clarified that Sam was on a familiar path he often traveled.

“I didn’t send him to play at the pond,” Parkinson stated during an interview. “He was collecting goose feathers on a path he knows well.” She added that the incident was blown out of proportion by those intervening.

One of the toughest outcomes for Parkinson is her long-term placement on the Child Protective Services registry. This restricts her ability to volunteer in her son’s classroom until he reaches sixth grade, a reality she finds frustrating.

Parkinson expressed concern about fear-driven parenting approaches. “We need to stop parenting from a place of fear and the unknown,” she remarked.

Following the episode, Sam was initially shaken but has since moved on, reassured by his mother he did nothing wrong. She added that it is no longer a significant concern for him.
