Democratic Candidate Cait Conley Supports Impeachment of War Secretary

4 weeks ago 0

Democratic congressional candidate Cait Conley, a veteran with 16 years of Army combat experience, announced her support for impeaching War Secretary Pete Hegseth. Conley is challenging Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District.

During a CNN’s “State of the Union” interview, Conley expressed her view on Hegseth’s leadership at the Pentagon. She stated, “I believe he has compromised American national security and disrespected his office. Removing him is essential as he has failed the service members dedicated to this country.”

Asked by anchor Dana Bash if her stance meant supporting impeachment articles against Hegseth, Conley affirmed, “Yes, for failing to protect America.”

The Lawler campaign responded to Conley’s statements via manager Ciro Riccardi, criticizing her for not distancing herself from figures like Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America.

Conley reiterated her belief that Hegseth has been a “disgrace to his office” and supported his removal due to inadequate protection of U.S. interests. Her remarks came after House Democrats introduced impeachment articles against Hegseth, citing his handling of the Iran conflict, military operations discussions over Signal, and other issues.

Pentagon spokesman Kingsley Wilson dismissed these efforts, claiming they are attempts to detract from the Department of War’s successes under Hegseth in Iran.

Despite ongoing controversies, Hegseth remains firm against criticisms. He has previously accused media and critics of relying on disgruntled employees to tarnish his image.

Calls for change at the Pentagon have transcended party lines. Sen. Thom Tillis urged President Trump to replace Hegseth following Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s resignation. However, the White House, through spokeswoman Anna Kelly, stated President Trump fully supports Hegseth.

Driscoll’s departure highlighted reported tension over Army modernization, though he publicly acknowledged Hegseth’s role in supporting progress.
