Italian basketball star Cecilia Zandalasini expressed her frustration with FIBA officials following Italy’s narrow 55-52 defeat to the United States in the Women’s World Cup. Zandalasini aimed to equalize with a three-pointer in the final moments. Meanwhile, she claimed she was fouled by Jackie Young as she attempted to make space for the shot.
With no foul called, Zandalasini’s shot was contested. Her attempt missed, concluding the match unfavorably for Italy. Post-game, Zandalasini confronted the officials, visibly upset, and had to be restrained by her team’s staff.
Later, Zandalasini offered an apology during a press conference. “I would like to apologize for the way I reacted,” she stated. “It wasn’t sportsmanship at all. Yeah, just wanted to apologize to the team and the referee. When I wear this jersey, it’s just a different me I guess. I feel embarrassed. I just wanted to say that out loud and to whoever watches.”
During the game, Zandalasini recorded 14 points and seven rebounds over 27 minutes. Italy managed to challenge the U.S. throughout the contest. However, the American team capitalized on their interior offense to draw fouls and earn free throws.
The U.S. was led by Jackie Young, who contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Angel Reese scored eight points and secured three rebounds. Italy’s effort fell short as the Americans clutched victory.
