On Monday, the trial commenced for three men charged with the murder of two Australian surfers and an American in Mexico. The victims were Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, aged 30 and 33, and their 30-year-old American friend, Jack Carter Rhoad. This incident occurred in April 2024 during their surfing trip to Mexico’s Pacific coast.
The authorities stated that the murders took place during a robbery attempt on the victims’ pickup truck. This vehicle was later discovered burned near their bodies. The victims were camping on a remote beach in Baja California state when attacked. Their bodies were found dumped in a cliff-top shaft several days later, bearing gunshot wounds to the head.
The Robinsons’ parents, Debra and Martin Robinson, attended the trial’s commencement in Ensenada. An emotional Debra Robinson was seen in tears during the proceedings. Martin Robinson expressed to reporters that their presence at the trial was to represent their sons and uncover the truth behind the incident.
The surfers were officially reported missing on April 27, 2024. According to prosecutors, the attackers intentionally ambushed them, leading to their deaths on April 28. Their bodies were discovered on May 3, 2024.
Three witnesses testified in court, one being the stepson of a defendant. Testifying from another room with his face hidden, he described his stepfather as violent. He recounted accompanying the accused to the crime scene and hearing commotion before fleeing, only to return after being summoned by the group. He disclosed feeling threatened that he would face the same fate as the victims if he spoke out.
Ary Gisell Silva, the girlfriend of the witness’s stepfather, had already been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement. She admitted initiating the robbery to steal the pickup’s tires. Evidence revealed Silva had suggested robbing the tourists after noticing their valuable possessions.
The crime unfolded a wave of outrage and sorrow in Australia and the U.S. Friends and families of the victims mobilized a significant social media campaign to locate their bodies. Callum Robinson had a background in professional lacrosse in the U.S. Jake Robinson was planning to start a medical career upon returning to Australia. Jack Carter Rhoad was to wed in a few months, and his fiancée expressed her grief in court, calling his death a personal nightmare.
Baja California is among Mexico’s most violent states, impacted by organized crime and drug trafficking. Although such activities rarely involve tourists, foreign visitors have previously been targeted, like the 2015 murders of Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman.
