A memorial event marking the one-year anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University has sparked opposition. Hosted by Turning Point USA, the “Freedom Built to Last Memorial” is scheduled for September 10 at the UCCU Center, the site where Kirk was fatally shot while speaking to thousands last year.
Protest Against the Memorial Event
The university’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, alongside groups such as the Community Defense Club of UVU and The Black Menaces, plan to protest outside the venue. These groups have accused the university of closing the campus to accommodate the event and endorsing Kirk’s views.
The UVU administration has closed campus that day and endorsed this event, which is an endorsement of the views of Turning Point and Charlie Kirk. We will not stand for this, and we invite anyone who can attend to join us in solidarity to protest TPUSA, UVU Admin, and the Utah County Commissioners.
UVU’s official statement clarified that the campus closure aims to provide space for reflection and healing, not endorse the event.
Turning Point USA’s Memorial Event
The event is described as both a tribute to Kirk and a rally to continue his advocacy. Turning Point USA emphasized Kirk’s roles as a husband, father, and defender of free speech. Conservative speakers like Glenn Beck and Frank Turek are scheduled to participate. The event will be livestreamed across multiple platforms.
Security Measures for the Memorial
The UCCU Center has implemented extensive security protocols for attendees. Entry requires tickets, and attendees will face security screenings. Metal detectors and inspections of permissible items will be in place. Restrictions include limits on bags and bans on several items such as cameras and banners. Face coverings must not conceal more than the mouth and nose.
Newsweek has contacted UVU and Turning Point USA for comments but has yet to receive responses.
