Rep. Chris Pappas secured the Democratic Senate nomination in New Hampshire, a crucial state for Democrats in the midterm elections. Pappas emerged victorious over Karishma Manzur in a significant race following the announcement of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s retirement. Shaheen was notable as the first woman in U.S. history elected as both governor and senator.
Despite Republicans’ 16-year dry spell in winning Senate seats in New Hampshire, the party views this open seat as a chance to gain advantage during the midterms. The Pappas-Manzur contest was one of the final major battles in a primary season marked by victories for the far-left against centrist candidates, indicating a shift within the Democratic Party.
Manzur, a scientist with a Ph.D. in biochemistry and a member of a local Democratic Socialists of America group, advocated for policies like universal health care and raising the minimum wage. She also called for abolishing ICE and ending military aid to Israel, citing human rights concerns in the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. She criticized Pappas for his previous support from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC.
Pappas has had his turn and hasn’t served the state honorably, she asserted.
Pappas, acknowledging Israel as a historic ally, stated his disagreements with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he labeled as reckless. Pappas believes a change in leadership could influence U.S.-Israel relations positively. Enjoying strong establishment and union support, Pappas has been the frontrunner since Shaheen announced her retirement.
Manzur accused Pappas of adopting populist messages from her campaign as his polling numbers dipped. She claims his record shows he has not consistently supported such ideals during his tenure.
Defending his record, Pappas mentioned his ongoing efforts to eliminate big money from politics, a commitment since he was elected in 2018. He emphasized that New Hampshire voters value pragmatism over left- or right-wing ideologies.
Pappas is expected to face either former Sen. John E. Sununu or former Sen. Scott Brown in the general election. He expressed confidence in uniting the party, highlighting the importance of maintaining the seat for the Democrats to regain Senate control.
