On September 8, 2026, Malibu declared a local emergency following the formation of a huge sinkhole in Nicolas Cage’s driveway. This incident led to evacuation orders for 31 homes. The Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s departments were at the scene on Sea Level Drive at 5:45 a.m. The property, belonging to the ‘Spider-Noir’ and ‘Pig’ actor, faced significant damage. Cage’s representative was unavailable for immediate comment.
By evening, the sinkhole expanded to a depth of 25 feet and a width of 30 by 60 feet. Officials warned of worsening conditions influenced by high tides and rainfall from Tropical Storm Marie. The city’s emergency declaration emphasized the immediate danger to homes nearby as the gated community nears Lechuza Beach. Seven homes received red tags due to hazards. Another 24 were tagged owing to inaccessibility for vehicles.
The emergency declaration highlighted access difficulties for emergency personnel. The road’s collapse left a narrow passage unsuitable for fire engines and other large vehicles, posing risks to public safety and response efforts. Malibu High School set up a temporary shelter on Morning View Drive. Gas services were halted, and officials cautioned that water service might also cease if needed.
The duration of the evacuation order remains uncertain. The National Weather Service forecast high surf and coastal flood risks until 11 p.m. Tuesday for Malibu’s coast, several nearby beaches, and islands. They predicted waves from 4 to 7 feet, with local waves reaching 8 feet. Such conditions could cause critical rip currents and pose life-threatening hazards. Beach erosion and coastal flooding were likely during high tides.
The emergency declaration also acknowledged potential coastal erosion due to an incoming El Niño event, which could yield record sea levels, severe floods, and significant beach reductions in California this winter. Nicolas Cage, known for winning an Oscar and Golden Globe for his role in ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ also starred in Prime Video’s ‘Spider-Noir.’ The series, however, was recently canceled despite being in awards contention.
