Overview of the Minnesota Senate Race
A recent poll indicates a close contest between Democrat Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya for Minnesota’s open U.S. Senate seat. The poll shows Flanagan with a narrow lead of 44 percent to Tafoya’s 42 percent among likely voters, suggesting that the election could be highly competitive as the November midterms approach.
Conducted by TIPP/League of American Workers from August 31 to September 2 with 1,201 likely voters, the poll has a margin of error of 3 percent. It reveals that 4 percent of respondents support other candidates, 2 percent support someone else, and 8 percent are undecided. This polling follows both candidates securing their party nominations, gearing up for the general election to fill the seat being vacated by Democrat Senator Tina Smith.
Political Context
The League of American Workers, although not formally affiliated with the Republican Party, is a conservative advocacy group led by former Trump adviser Steve Cortes. Midterm elections often test the party in power, as historically, the president’s party tends to lose seats during these elections. Despite Republicans holding a narrow majority in the House and Senate, The Cook Political Report rates the race as likely Democrat.
The recent presidential election saw former Vice President Kamala Harris winning Minnesota by approximately four points over President Donald Trump.
“Michele Tafoya would be nothing but a loyal soldier to Donald Trump,” commented Lexi Byler, spokesperson for Flanagan’s campaign, in response to the new poll.
According to Byler, Tafoya supports policies aligned with Trump’s agenda, which have had detrimental effects on Minnesota. Flanagan, contrastingly, is portrayed as a champion of working families.
Tafoya’s response conveyed frustration over taxpayer funds and criticized Flanagan’s record as lieutenant governor.
Candidate Backgrounds and Support
Peggy Flanagan, Minnesota’s lieutenant governor, entered the general election as the Democratic nominee after defeating Representative Angie Craig in the party’s primary. Her nomination victory highlights the Democratic Party’s shift towards more progressive ideals, with endorsements from influential figures like Bernie Sanders and Ilhan Omar.
Conversely, Michele Tafoya, known for her former role as an NFL sideline reporter, aims to leverage her name recognition and outsider status to gain traction among voters.
Current Polling Insights
Polling shows a closer race than past surveys, indicating Tafoya’s campaign progress. Despite Flanagan holding a two-point lead, the race lacks a clear frontrunner as the election approaches.
Flanagan leads among Gen-Z, Millennial, female, Black, and Hispanic voters, whereas Tafoya finds support from those aged 45 and older, men, and white voters. Both candidates secure 37 percent of the independent vote.
Favorability ratings show Tafoya at 34 percent favorable and 30 percent unfavorable, while Flanagan stands at 39 percent favorable and 34 percent unfavorable.
Prediction Markets
Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket reflect a significant likelihood of Flanagan’s victory, estimating her chances at over 90 percent compared to Tafoya’s single-digit prospects.
