Fox News recently conducted an exclusive interview with James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, where he clarified his position on key issues. He supports a ban on gender surgery for minors and opposes transgender-identifying men competing in women’s sports. The Texas Senate race, pivotal for both parties’ control, is drawing attention as recent polls indicate a close contest.
Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton, Texas Attorney General, who carries his controversies. A Republican loss could impact President Donald Trump’s policy agenda. At a campaign event in Dallas, Talarico spoke with Fox News, coinciding with a nearby GOP midterm convention.
Campaigning with Clear Stances
Talarico affirmed his support for a national ban on gender surgery for minors, stating, “Absolutely.” He explained his opposition to a previous Texas bill on this issue due to its broad scope. Talarico voted for an amendment aiming to narrow the bill’s focus, which ultimately failed. His legislative efforts reflect a desire for specificity in policy.
He also commented on the involvement of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Talarico emphasized the importance of safety and fairness, stating opposition if these are compromised. As a former public school teacher, his focus remains on student welfare.
Addressing Past Statements
Talarico acknowledged and clarified his previous comments. In 2021, he described God as non-binary, which he now frames as an attempt to illustrate the inadequacy of human categories in defining the divine. He also revisited his stance on gender, acknowledging two primary sexes while noting genetic exceptions. His previous claim of six genders, he admitted, was inaccurately communicated.
On the judicial front, Talarico criticized the Supreme Court, describing it as “infected” with corruption. He supports reform, advocating for binding codes of conduct, term limits, and potentially expanding the number of justices.
Focus on Economic Issues
Talarico aims to center his campaign on economic concerns, highlighting affordability issues faced by Texans. He addressed the lack of a state income tax in Texas, previously voting against a related measure citing it as redundant. Despite this, the measure passed, reflecting ongoing debates in state governance.
He labeled Paxton as “the most corrupt politician in Texas,” cautioning against distractions from critical campaign issues.
As the race progresses, Talarico’s campaign will emphasize economic challenges like gas prices, grocery costs, and healthcare, striving to address Texans’ everyday struggles.
