Challenges Mount as Cubs Struggle with Pitching and Playoff Push

3 weeks ago 0

The Chicago Cubs have recently faced difficulties that highlight key issues in their roster. Kevin Gausman’s inconsistent performance is one such challenge. While he demonstrates potential, his inability to maintain consistent execution on the mound has become a concern. On Wednesday night in Milwaukee, Gausman allowed seven runs, six earned, to the Brewers. The early six-run deficit put the Cubs in a difficult position, leading to an 8-6 defeat despite a valiant five-run effort in the ninth inning.

Manager Craig Counsell expressed the need for the team to address various shortcomings. “We’re not playing good enough,” he noted, pointing out issues across pitching and defense. Gausman himself recognized the need for better execution, particularly with his splitter. He acknowledged the critical nature of the game but was unable to deliver the expected performance.

The Cubs, currently on a four-game losing streak with an 81-66 record, find their playoff hopes threatened. Less than a month ago, they were comfortably positioned for postseason play. However, a series of losses has them clinging to the second wild-card spot, trailing the Philadelphia Phillies by 1.5 games and holding just a 2.5-game advantage over the San Diego Padres. With a tiebreaker over key competitors, the Cubs remain in contention but face mounting pressure as they prepare for their next stretch.

Cubs Bullpen Faces Late-Season Pressures

The bullpen’s recent struggles have compounded the Cubs’ challenges. Jacob Webb, a key figure in high-leverage situations, has faltered following a strong two-month scoreless streak. His recent performances have contributed to the bullpen’s 5.08 ERA, currently the 24th lowest in MLB. The urgency of the issue grows as the regular season nears its end, requiring immediate stabilization to secure playoff contention.

Manager Counsell emphasized the lack of set roles in the bullpen this season, noting the unpredictability of game-deciding moments. However, the need for effective relief pitching has become clear as starters have yet to perform deep into games, increasing reliance on the bullpen.

Home Runs Mar Cubs’ Pitching Efforts

The Cubs also grapple with opponents’ home runs undermining their strategies. They lead the league with 203 home runs but have allowed 221, a concerning stat for any pitching staff. Gausman’s three home runs allowed on Wednesday contribute to this issue. These struggles demand attention from the Cubs’ front office as they balance offensive power with defensive liabilities.

President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer acknowledged the home run dilemma as a significant factor in their recent challenges. With players like Clay Holmes and David Peterson designed to induce groundball outs, the pitching strategy needs refinement.

Gausman remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. “We’re confident in this group,” he asserted, maintaining a focus on future games rather than dwelling on current setbacks.
