College football offers excitement, but early games often lack thrill. Many teams appear hesitant at the season’s start. While games between lesser-known schools and top powerhouses bring some buzz and finances to the smaller teams, watching victories by large margins is monotonous. Early ranked matchups could enhance regular season significance, making undefeated runs more impressive.
If Notre Dame finishes the season without a loss, only two games might stand out. In contrast, if Ohio State and Texas face each other at the start and one emerges undefeated, it’s more commendable. Consider Ohio State taking on the Texas Longhorns at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, on August 30, 2025. The Buckeyes, ranked as the top team, showed their prowess by decisively beating Ball State 56-3 in their opener. Quarterback Julian Sayin excelled, throwing 320 yards on 21 of 25 passes with three touchdowns, backed by solid performances from both his backups.
Ohio State now prepares to confront Texas’s formidable defense, promising a challenging encounter after last year’s close contest. Despite showing dominance throughout last season, Ohio State scored only 14 points against Texas last year, with Sayin recording his season-low 126 passing yards. Facing Texas again, Ohio State must have a strategy for overcoming the Longhorns’ defense.
On the other hand, Texas enters today’s game ranked fourth nationwide, burdened by high expectations. Repeatedly tested early, Texas faced Ohio State last season in their inaugural game. Struggling offensively, the Longhorns managed only seven points, with quarterback Arch Manning showing discomfort, completing barely over half his passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.
This year, Texas commenced with a win over Texas State. Despite my prediction for a relaxed performance, the Longhorns, easing up in the final quarter, amassed enough points early to negate a quieter finish. Manning improved markedly, registering 305 yards, four touchdowns, and completing 20 of 27 passes, though with one interception. This game demands Texas’s utmost effort; losing to top teams would tarnish their reputation. With a tough schedule, the Longhorns must excel from the beginning.
Ohio State’s defense suffered losses since their last clash, creating a scenario favoring the Longhorns. Opting for the home team seeking revenge seems justified. Supporting Texas seems promising.
