Deshaun Watson’s Early Turnover Sets Tone for Cleveland Browns

3 weeks ago 0

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson faced a setback early in the 2026 season. During their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Watson committed his first turnover of the season. The Browns received the ball first, with a bright Florida sun highlighting their match.

Watson initially made progress with two successive passes: a 14-yard completion followed by a 9-yard pass. The team advanced to the Jaguars’ 33-yard line in only four plays, but the momentum shifted unexpectedly. As Watson attempted another pass, Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun intercepted it and returned the ball to Jacksonville’s 41-yard line.

“It’s definitely not the start Watson would have hoped for amid a tumultuous few weeks,” noted sources referring to recent events.

During the preseason, Browns’ fans voiced their dissatisfaction, leading to Watson making controversial remarks. He referred to fan reactions as “disrespectful,” after reminiscing about a previous injury at the same stadium where fans cheered at his misfortune. Watson later expressed regret for his comments.

These remarks affected the team’s atmosphere as the season began. On ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” Rex Ryan, former head coach of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, criticized the Browns’ decision to start Watson. Ryan stated he wouldn’t have played Watson, given the circumstances.

“No way would I have started him,” Ryan said. “No way. In fact, I would have cut him.” His opinion reflected growing unrest around Watson’s status on the team. Shedeur Sanders remains an option for the Browns should Watson face further challenges.

Following Watson’s turnover, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence quickly capitalized by connecting with Parker Washington for a 30-yard touchdown, putting Jacksonville ahead early in the first quarter.
