Steve Ballmer, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, acknowledged his team’s breach of NBA rules in his first public statement since his one-year ban. His remarks came after he accepted responsibility for the scandal involving Kawhi Leonard and confirmed payment of the league-imposed $30 million fine.
Ballmer expressed regret on social media, saying, “This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets. I want to apologize to our fans, employees, and my fellow NBA team owners for the distraction and distress this matter has caused, for which I accept responsibility as principal owner.” The NBA announced on September 2 that the Clippers and Leonard violated salary cap rules, a charge that was previously denied by both parties.
Ballmer faced suspension from all league and team activities for knowingly aiding Leonard in securing off-court income opportunities and approving a business deal tied to an endorsement agreement. His lack of compliance with NBA circumvention rules led to significant consequences.
Apart from Ballmer’s penalties, Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker faced a one-year suspension without pay and President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank faced a six-month suspension without pay. The team also forfeited first-round draft picks annually from 2029 to 2033.
Ballmer’s statement read: “We are committing to put this chapter behind us. We have communicated to the NBA that we are complying with the penalties assessed by the league, have paid the fine, and are moving forward. While there are still disagreements concerning the findings in the report, this is not where I want to focus. Team owners should support, not distract.”
Despite the challenges, Ballmer reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding the team and investing in the community. He emphasized his priority is maintaining the confidence of fans and striving for high-level competition.
The league’s investigation made clear the association between Leonard, the Clippers, and Aspiration. Ballmer’s acceptance of accountability followed public exposure of the salary cap circumvention attempt.
While Ballmer aims to move forward, the repercussions of this scandal will impact the Clippers for years. Their future involves rebuilding trust and complying with NBA standards.
