The 13th annual Rock the Block event in downtown Lake Zurich took place on September 12, featuring clear skies and temperatures in the 80s. Starting at 5 p.m. and concluding at 11 p.m., this free event saw three bands perform live. The lineup included yacht rock band The Ron Burgundy’s, pop band Libido Funk Circus, and rock band 7th Heaven.
Libido Funk Circus was among the performers at the event, which was graced with waves of breezes and golden summer lighting. Mayor Tom Poynton, who initiated Rock the Block in 2013 as a community builder event, stated that approximately 8,000 people attended. The improvements to downtown helped create a lively atmosphere, enhancing the venue’s ability to accommodate and monitor large crowds.
A variety of food trucks and vendors lined Main Street. A large bar area sold adult beverages, with many servers volunteering their time. Up to 100 volunteers contributed to the event’s success; Mayor Poynton expressed gratitude for their efforts, emphasizing their importance.
“We wouldn’t get this on without the volunteers,” Poynton said.
Attendees enjoyed both complimentary and paid amenities. Julie Austin, a former resident and Lake Zurich High School alumna, regularly attends the event. She expressed her enthusiasm for the community spirit of Rock the Block.
Families like the Mazur and Dillingham families found the event family-friendly. They appreciated having a local event to enjoy together. Children enjoyed treats like flavored ice and others tasted barbecue pulled pork over mashed potatoes from food trucks.
“It’s wonderful for the community,” Emily Dillingham said.
Arbin Shrestha acknowledged the volunteers, highlighting the significance of their contribution to the event’s success.
