Kyler Murray’s Concussion Setback and Its Impact on the Vikings

2 weeks ago 0

Kyler Murray’s debut with the Minnesota Vikings did not go as planned. During a game at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, Murray suffered a concussion early in the matchup against the Green Bay Packers. This injury occurred during the third offensive play after he was hit hard by two Packers players.

Following the incident, Murray entered concussion protocol. This raised questions about his availability for upcoming games. However, head coach Kevin O’Connell provided an update on Murray’s condition after the Vikings’ comeback victory over their NFC North rivals. O’Connell mentioned that Murray felt “pretty good” when he arrived at the facility on Monday.

O’Connell confirmed that Murray remains in concussion protocol. Despite this, Murray has been attending team meetings. O’Connell emphasized a cautious approach, stating the team would take things “a day at a time” while ensuring Murray meets all necessary health checks.

Vikings fans may have concerns about Murray’s status for Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. The Bears scored an impressive 59 points against the Carolina Panthers in their recent win, making them formidable opponents. Although initial observations suggested Murray might be sidelined, there remains hope as long as he clears protocol steps.

Before his injury, Murray completed 3-of-5 passes for 18 yards. Unfortunately, he also threw an interception on his first regular-season snap with the Vikings. The interception came after the Packers executed an immediate blitz, pressuring Murray into a jump ball that was intercepted.

With Murray out of the game, Carson Wentz took over. Wentz, retained by the Vikings after serving as a backup last season, delivered a solid performance. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and claimed three touchdowns, contributing to the 39-22 victory.

Should Murray be unavailable for the upcoming game, Wentz will likely start for Minnesota. J.J. McCarthy, who was chosen in the first round of the 2024 draft, is expected to serve as Wentz’s backup.
