In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s Week 1 clash with the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders’ experienced wide receiver, Stefon Diggs, incurred a significant penalty. His post-touchdown celebration led to a 15-yard penalty, affecting his team’s strategy.
After receiving a touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels, Diggs celebrated by running through the end zone and leaping onto the goal post. This action was seen as unsportsmanlike conduct and moved the Commanders out of the favorable range for a two-point conversion.
Washington’s head coach, Dan Quinn, commented that the team had plans to attempt a two-point conversion before the penalty changed their approach. They decided to kick an extra point instead, which narrowed the Eagles’ lead to 17-16.
The game concluded with Philadelphia edging out a 24-22 victory over Washington. Postgame, Diggs reflected on the incident, telling reporters, “As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot.’ Back in the day, I’ve been playing for a long time, you used to be able to do that. I’ve got to be better.”
Regarding his performance, Diggs completed his first game with the Commanders with a total of four catches, amassing 55 yards and scoring a touchdown.
Looking ahead, Washington aims to rebound in their upcoming Week 2 face-off against the Dallas Cowboys, scheduled for Sunday.
