Before the New York Giants’ regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, a key uncertainty was whether star receiver Malik Nabers would play. While medically cleared for weeks, his emotional readiness was unsure. Nabers faced the challenge of returning from a knee injury involving his ACL and meniscus, which demanded overcoming psychological as well as physical obstacles.
The new head coach, John Harbaugh, introduced himself to the New York Giants in a news conference on Jan. 20, 2026. Known for his unique methods, Harbaugh has guided his teams to 13 season-opening wins since his head coach debut in 2008. His ability to judge when players require encouragement or a push is evident. Nabers needed the latter. During a walkthrough practice, Harbaugh undertook a literal approach to reassure Nabers by tackling him, easing Nabers’ fears about enduring hits in actual games.
“I know everybody was worried about if I get tackled,” Nabers told reporters. “Actually, coach Harbaugh tackled me … He wanted to see if I could take a tackle and it was good.”
Quarterback Jaxson Dart described this moment as a turning point, saying, “It was right before we were supposed to start our walkthrough, and things were just up in the air. We didn’t know exactly what was going to happen.” Harbaugh believed a tactical bump would prove to Nabers he was ready.
After getting tackled by Harbaugh, Nabers stood up to reassurance from the team. “See, you’re all good,” Harbaugh remarked. Despite this moment, Harbaugh remained unsure of Nabers’ game participation until several hours before kickoff.
“I got a sense like about three hours before the game, maybe two and a half, somewhere in there,” Harbaugh said. Upon testing his readiness, Nabers decided to play after receiving both medical clearance and personal affirmation of his condition.
Nabers performed commendably, recording six catches for 69 yards. Although these stats might seem modest, his performance restored faith in him as an asset, demonstrating his capability to handle contact.
“It was amazing, it was amazing,” Nabers shared about returning to the game. “I’m happy that the fans still love to see me out there.”
