A mockup of President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch recently appeared at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington on June 27, 2026. This structure, designed to reach 250 feet in height, is intended to serve as a military complex. Features are expected to include sniper positions and extensive weapon storage.
In a Truth Social post, Trump outlined that military operations at the arch are essential for national security. He stated, “At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch… into a top-grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch.” He detailed the planned uses for the structure, which would include drone storage and deployment capabilities, sniper placements, and significant ammunition reserves.
The proposed construction location for the arch sits between Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial, making the arch twice the height of the latter. This has attracted significant opposition. More than 100,000 people submitted their feedback to the National Park Service during its review process.
Legal challenges have also arisen. U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkin recently mandated that the government must provide 48 hours’ notice before commencing any activities at Memorial Circle. Any construction or demolition without final authorization from the National Park Service would contravene this order. Lawsuits from Vietnam War veterans and an architectural historian argue the project disrespects the sanctity of nearby Arlington National Cemetery and lacks congressional approval.
Despite these hurdles, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced plans to proceed with groundbreaking within two weeks, although approvals from the National Capital Planning Commission and other reviews are still pending. In defense of the project, Trump declared, “There will be no facility like this anywhere in the World. Out of the 59 top cities and Capitals, Washington, D.C., IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD THAT DOES NOT HAVE A TRIUMPHAL ARCH, but it will now and, by far, the greatest of them all!”
