A developing nor’easter may bring heavy rain, strong winds, dangerous surf, and flooding to the East Coast this week. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the storm’s path and intensity.
Understanding Nor’easters
The National Weather Service defines a nor’easter as a storm affecting the East Coast of North America, characterized by northeast winds in coastal areas. These storms occur year-round, most frequently between September and April, and often lead to heavy rain or snow, gale-force winds, rough seas, and coastal flooding.
Forecasters’ Predictions
The Weather Channel reports that low pressure may intensify into a nor’easter near the Northeast coast later this week. This system could disrupt travel and trigger high surf, rain, strong winds, and coastal erosion.
Forecast models suggest varying positions for the low-pressure system. If it remains closer to shore, stronger winds and increased rain could impact the Northeast. A model projecting the system farther offshore indicates lesser effects along the Interstate 95 corridor.
AccuWeather forecasts potential coastal flooding during high tide from North Carolina to New York between Tuesday and Friday. The threat might extend along the northern Mid-Atlantic coast and southeastern New England over the weekend. Astronomical tide levels could rise due to the full moon, exacerbating water levels.
Meteorologist Alex DaSilva from AccuWeather stated the storm could result in gusty winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions later this week and into the weekend. Power outages might occur in coastal areas due to strong winds and leaves on the trees.
DaSilva noted AccuWeather favors a storm track nearer to the coast, predicting substantial impacts; yet, the storm’s path should become clearer soon.
Extreme Weather Forecasts
FOX Weather anticipates major coastal flooding, extreme surf, and ongoing heavy rain in the Outer Banks. Wind gusts may reach 40 to 50 mph, and offshore waves could climb to 15 to 18 feet. Coastal roads, such as Highway 12, might experience ocean overwash.
The FOX Forecast Center anticipates moderate coastal flooding during high tides, affecting back bays and low-lying coastal roads. This tidal flooding could extend from North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey to southern New England.
FOX Weather predicts the low-pressure system will move toward the I-95 corridor and New England by the weekend. A potential scenario moves the system closer to Boston, possibly causing wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph, heavy rain, storm surge, and disruption around Boston Harbor and Massachusetts coast.
Another track closer to Long Island or New Jersey could shift severe effects southward, potentially placing New York City near the storm’s fringe. If the low remains offshore, coastal New England might face rough surf, elevated tides, and breezy conditions, while peak winds and rain stay out at sea.
