During a town hall event titled “Students vs. Billionaires” at Western Michigan University, Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed became the subject of online ridicule. This followed his unconventional response to a pro-life student’s question concerning his advocacy for codifying Roe v. Wade into law and funding Planned Parenthood.
El-Sayed, addressing the student, began by acknowledging their perspective on valuing life. He proposed a question: how can society best protect life, and whose life may be impacted in the process? His comments compared a pregnant woman to an ‘adult, or sometimes even a juvenile human,’ reduced to being a ‘carrying vehicle for a fetus that has not ever breathed air’ when government restricts reproductive care.
“The currently existing life of the mother… is often disregarded,” El-Sayed noted, stressing how abortion restrictions impact women.
Conservative voices on social media swiftly criticized El-Sayed’s choice of words, accusing him of dehumanizing language. A post from RNC Research highlighted El-Sayed’s avoidance of the term ‘woman’ in his comments about pregnancy. Others, like Rich Sementa, producer of the Mark Levin Show, and the National Review’s Rich Lowry, echoed similar sentiments about El-Sayed’s language.
Critics also included Great Lakes HQ and Tom Elliott, who called El-Sayed’s comment a ‘word salad’ and noted its complexity in avoiding the straightforward mention of women’s rights in abortion contexts.
Following additional criticism from former GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon, who accused El-Sayed of distancing the relationship between mothers and children, El-Sayed’s stance remains in focus as the Senate race nears. His views on abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender-affirming care for minors are under scrutiny. He identifies as a capitalist despite frequent claims of socialism.
In the upcoming election, El-Sayed will run against Republican candidate Mike Rogers for the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. Fox News Digital sought comments from El-Sayed’s campaign regarding these developments.
